In 1850, miners made
their first foray into Plumas County, drawn by rumors
of a lake of gold. Then pioneer James Beckwourth discovered
an easier pass through the Sierra Nevada, and nothing
could stop the wagon trains. The remains of Beckwourth’s
trading post are just a stone’s throw from Grizzly
Ranch. Be sure to stop by when you visit.
By the 1880s railroad companies, spurred
by the timber industry, began forging links throughout
the region and across the West. A logging railroad
bed still remains at Grizzly Ranch. It will become
part of our hiking trail system.
